When to use Advantage+ placements instead of manual targeting

Unchecking Audience Network turns Advantage+ off for placements. Keep Advantage+ on unless this campaign must run in specific placements only. Account-wide bans belong in Advertising settings, not in every ad set.

The placement breakdown shows most spend on Audience Network and Stories. Feed, where the creative was built, got a sliver. The usual fix is Manual placements with the rest unchecked.

That switch turns Advantage+ off for placements. Delivery then cannot pick the cheapest eligible impression across every surface.

Use Advantage+ placements unless this campaign must run in specific placements only. Put account-wide bans in Advertising settings. Keep a one-off surface test short, and know Advantage+ is off.

Advantage+ placements is not audience targeting

Advantage+ placements, also labeled Placements with Advantage+ on, is a delivery setting at the ad set. It is not Advantage+ audience.

Audience decides who can see the ad. Placements decide where the ad can show among Meta's surfaces.

Meta's Advantage+ placements help says the system looks across available placements to find cost-effective opportunities for each impression. Surfaces can include Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp, Threads, and Audience Network. Not every placement is available for every objective and ad format.

Meta published an experiment with 11.7 percent lower cost per action on average versus manual placement settings. That is Meta's test, not a forecast for this account. Treat it as a reason to keep the default, not as a guarantee.

Adding placements does not raise the price of the ad by itself. It adds eligible inventory. Unchecking a surface to "save money" often just removes cheap auctions and leaves more expensive ones.

When to keep Advantage+ on

Keep Advantage+ placements on when the creative can run in more than one format, or when unsupported formats can drop on their own. If a placement cannot support the format, Meta excludes it without a manual uncheck.

If Stories looks wrong, customize assets for that placement instead of killing Stories. Preview the ad for each surface before you treat the breakdown as a creative failure.

If Audience Network feels low quality, inspect landing pages, the offer, and the optimization event before blaming the surface. A Feed-only ad set is a different product than a Feed-first creative that still runs elsewhere.

Account controls instead of ad set exclusions

When the business cannot use certain placements at all, set that once. Meta's account controls help says Advertising settings apply to every campaign in the ad account, including existing ones. New campaigns inherit the same limits.

Account-level placement controls do not flip the ad set to Advantage+ off. Ad set exclusions do.

Use the account control for a legal or brand ban. Leave Advantage+ on for the placements that remain.

What turns Advantage+ off

Meta's Advantage+ on and off help is blunt. Advantage+ off appears next to Placements if you exclude placements in any ad set, or if you opt out of Mobile or Desktop devices.

All devices is the recommended device setting. A Mobile-only cut is a real constraint, not a performance trick. It still turns Advantage+ off for that section, so the campaign no longer gets every placement optimization Meta attaches to the on state.

Special ad category campaigns and pharmaceutical campaigns may not have every Advantage+ feature, or they may show a different editor. Do not force a playbook from a standard sales campaign onto those setups.

When Manual placements is the honest choice

Manual placements is for a hard where, not for a feeling about the breakdown. In the Placements section, Advantage+ is selected by default. Hover it, click Edit, and select Manual placements only when one of these is true.

  • This campaign must appear only on named placements, while the rest of the account stays on Advantage+.
  • A short one-placement test is required, and Advantage+ off is accepted for that ad set.
  • Special ad category or pharmaceutical setups limit Advantage+ placements or show a different editor.
  • Mobile-only or desktop-only delivery is required, knowing that device opt-out turns Advantage+ off.

On some traffic and engagement campaigns, Meta offers Allow limited spend to excluded placements. That can send up to 5% of budget to each excluded surface when delivery expects a gain. It is a leak, not a reason to exclude first and hope the 5% fixes it.

A test belongs in a duplicate ad set with a stop date. Do not convert the always-on spend to Manual because last Tuesday's breakdown looked ugly.

A campaign score of 100 and Advantage+ on in other sections is a different setup. This post is only the Placements toggle. Turning placements to Manual does not by itself fix an audience that was also narrowed to Advantage+ off.

What a placement switch will not fix

Manual placements will not repair Instant Form leads that arrive without a phone number. That is a form and mapping problem, covered in fix Facebook lead ads that deliver blank phone numbers.

It will not replace a weak offer, a slow landing page, or an optimization event that does not match the sale. Those still fail on Feed.

I write from work I have done on real sites. Search products change, and a step that was right when I published can go stale. I can also be wrong about the method.

Questions I hear a lot

How do you differ from a traditional agency?

You work with me, not a rotating cast. I audit, build, and train your team. Agencies often keep control and charge forever to run what you could own in-house.

What size of marketing budget makes sense for your services?

Honestly, you need enough marketing activity to make fixes worthwhile. Still very early stage? A course or specialist vendor may fit better. Already running a full in-house team? You probably want a full-time CMO, not me part-time.

Do you work with specific industries?

Yes: logistics, real estate, pro services, SaaS, local trades. Places where online leads hit the P&L fast. I skip healthcare and finance; compliance slows the work down.

What does a typical engagement look like?

Engagements start with a two-week audit of analytics, ads, SEO, and CRM. Then a 90-day plan focused on attribution, conversion, and what's leaking spend. Hands-on build and training along the way; at the end your team runs it.

How do I know if I need a digital marketing consultant versus hiring full-time?

If revenue is growing faster than you can hire marketing, fractional support fills the gap. Interim CMO work until you're ready for a full-time exec. Hiring help is available when you get there.

What happens after the engagement ends?

You keep logins, docs, and dashboards. Engagements are built so your team can maintain and troubleshoot. Some clients book a quarterly check-in; that's optional.
