What Search and AI Visibility Covers
Search and AI visibility means showing up when people look for what you offer—whether they search on Google, ask ChatGPT, or check Perplexity. This includes organic search rankings, technical SEO fixes, structured data markup, and answer engine optimization (AEO) so your content appears in AI-generated responses.
This is not paid ads or social media content. Organic visibility takes longer to build but costs less to maintain once it works. Most SMBs I work with have a site that Google can crawl but aren't ranking for buyer searches, or they show up on page three where no one clicks.
Why SMBs Struggle With Organic Visibility
You have a website, maybe even a blog, but traffic from search is flat or dropping. When you Google your services, competitors show up on page one and you don't. Maybe your site was built years ago with no SEO foundation, or someone set it up with plugins but never checked if they worked.
Search Console shows errors you don't understand. Rankings fluctuate with no clear cause. AI tools like ChatGPT mention competitors when asked about your industry, but never your business. You're not sure if it's a content problem, a technical problem, or both.
Where Organic Search Usually Breaks
- Your site has technical issues Google flags in Search Console, but no one on your team knows how to fix them
- Pages aren't optimized for the searches buyers actually use. You rank for brand terms but nothing else
- Schema markup is missing or broken. Search engines can't extract clear answers from your content
- Internal linking is random. Important service pages are buried three clicks deep with no path from the homepage
- Content was written for people, not search. No keyword targeting, no structure for AI extraction
How I Approach SEO and AI Visibility
Four phases: audit what's blocking rankings, fix technical and on-page issues, optimize content for buyer searches, then hand off monitoring to your team. Most engagements start with an audit because fixing the wrong thing wastes time and budget.
Phase 1: Technical Audit and Baseline
Full site crawl using Search Console data, schema validation, and indexation review. This uncovers broken redirects, crawl errors, missing metadata, duplicate content, and schema markup problems that prevent Google and AI tools from understanding your site.
You get a written priority list showing what to fix first based on impact. Typical duration is one to two weeks.
Phase 2: On-Page and Technical Fixes
Fix what the audit flagged. That includes updating page titles and meta descriptions, implementing or fixing schema markup, fixing internal links, resolving crawl errors, and setting up redirects where needed.
Technical fixes happen in your CMS or site code. For WordPress or Laravel sites, changes go through your dev team or I make them directly if you provide access. For platforms like Shopify or Squarespace, you or your admin makes the changes based on my documented instructions.
Phase 3: Content Targeting and Optimization
Keyword research to find what buyers search for, not just what you think they search for. Then map those keywords to existing pages or identify content gaps where new pages are needed.
For each target page, I provide optimization guidance: which keyword to prioritize, how to structure headings, what to include for AI answer eligibility. You or your team writes or updates the content. I review for search intent and extractability, then approve for publishing.
Phase 4: Monitoring and Handoff
Set up Search Console tracking, connect a rank tracker if you want one, and train your team on what metrics matter. Most clients check rankings monthly and only escalate if traffic drops or errors spike in Search Console.
You get a maintenance checklist covering what to monitor and when to bring me back in for quarterly reviews or new content optimization.
Where This Fits in Practice
A regional logistics company had a site ranking well for their brand name but nothing else. Their services pages had generic copy like "reliable logistics solutions" with no keyword targeting. Search Console showed hundreds of pages indexed, but most were old blog posts with thin content and no internal links.
The audit revealed missing schema markup, duplicate meta descriptions across 40 pages, and broken internal links from a site migration two years earlier. I fixed the technical issues first, then rewrote service page metadata to target searches like "freight broker for construction materials" and "LTL shipping California to Texas." Schema markup went on every service page so Google could extract clear service descriptions.
Within 12 weeks, Search Console impressions doubled. Within six months, three service pages ranked on page one for buyer searches. The client now updates content quarterly based on Search Console data and brings me in twice a year to review new opportunities.
A professional services firm wanted to show up in AI-generated answers when prospects asked about their industry. Their site had good content but no structured data. ChatGPT and Perplexity mentioned competitors but never them.
I added FAQ schema to their main service pages, implemented organization and service schema, and restructured content to answer common questions directly in the first paragraph of each page. Within eight weeks, their content started appearing in AI answer citations. Search traffic from Google increased as a side effect because the content became more extractable for everyone.
