A competitor replies to the LinkedIn ad. They quoted the offer back. The usual request is to block their office IP, the way Google Ads does.
Campaign Manager has no IP exclusion for who sees the ad. Exclude Company Name, or a matched company list, and accept that unmapped profiles can still slip through.
For a handful of competitors, Exclude Company Name on a Classic ad set. For a long list, upload a company list first, wait until it matches 300 members, then exclude that list.
LinkedIn does not block competitor IPs
LinkedIn uses IP in its own targeting, not as a block list you upload. Recent location can use IP for short-term visits. If a member leaves Company Name blank, LinkedIn may derive the current employer from a public IP at ad serving time.
That derivation is LinkedIn's mapping, described in the targeting options help. It is not a control that lets you paste office IP ranges and hide the ad. Brand-safety block lists for LinkedIn Audience Network hide publisher sites, not competitor employees on LinkedIn itself.
Company Name is the lever that matches this job. It is the organization a member lists as employer, mapped to a LinkedIn Page. Showcase Pages cannot be used as that attribute.
Mapping is not a legal identity check. Typeahead Page picks map cleanly.
A free-typed employer string is matched with a model, so the same rival can sit on more than one Page. Exclude every Page you can confirm, not only the brand's favorite vanity URL.
Exclude named companies on a Classic ad set
Build your own audience if the goal is a short competitor list. Auto-Targeting and Accelerate exclusions lean on uploaded company lists, locations, and a few attributes, not a long typeahead of rival Pages.
- Open the ad set Audience section and click Exclude under Who is your target audience.
- Choose Audience attributes, then Company, then Company Name, and search the competitor Page.
- Add each matched Page, then check Forecasted Results still sit above 300 members.
- Exclude employees of your own company so internal staff do not sit in the same pool.
LinkedIn's AND-OR targeting help is the Exclude path. Exclude reduces the audience to people who meet the include rules and do not meet the exclusion. Demographic inclusions and exclusions together cap at 200 selections.
Prefer current employer when the UI offers current, past, or current or past. Excluding past employers also drops alumni who now work at buyers. Most competitor leaks are people whose current Company Name maps to the rival Page.
If Forecasted Results collapse under 300 members, the ad set cannot run. Drop a duplicate Page, a redundant industry exclude, or a location stack before you add more rivals.
Do not exclude an entire industry as a shortcut for three competitors. That also hides buyers in the same industry. Named Pages or a matched company list keep the exclude tight.
When a company list is the right exclusion
A handful of named Pages belongs in Company Name. A roster of 50 affiliates, agencies, and lookalike brands belongs in a Matched Audience company list, then Exclude on that list.
LinkedIn's company list help requires at least 300 rows to upload. The list must also match at least 300 member accounts before it can be used in an active ad set. Until then the Audiences page shows fewer than 300 members and the name stays gray.
Use the Campaign Manager CSV template. Keep the headers.
Include Company Page URLs in the linkedin.com/company/name format, not a numeric ID, plus website or email domain when you have them. Match can take up to 48 hours.
Unused lists expire after 90 days if they sit in neither an active nor a draft ad set. Attach the exclusion to a draft ad set if the campaign is not live yet. On Accelerate, add the ready list under Exclude, then keep Exclude employees of your company checked.
A contact list is the other Matched Audience. Use it when the leak is named people, not the whole firm.
Upload their work emails, wait for the same 300-member floor, then Exclude that list. Do not mix company rows and contact rows in one file. LinkedIn builds one audience per list.
What an exclusion will not catch
People who typed a string employer that LinkedIn mapped to the wrong Page can still see the ad. People with no employer on the profile may be mapped from IP, or not mapped at all. Contractors who list a holding company instead of the brand you excluded will pass.
Excluding a competitor does not stop their staff from opening an organic post, a shared screenshot, or a colleague's feed. It only changes who is eligible for that ad set's paid delivery.
Repeat the Exclude on every ad set that can show the same creative. Account-level brand-safety lists will not do this job.
An exclusion also will not replace a weak offer. If the only people clicking are rivals, the targeting may be too tight, or the creative may be bait for the trade. Widen the include rules after the exclude is in place, then watch whether qualified titles still convert.
Choosing exclusions that hide rivals without shrinking the buyer pool is part of performance marketing work. For a look at whether Classic Company Name or a matched list fits the current account, start with Get Free Assessment.
If this post is wrong, outdated, or you would take a different path
I write from work I have done on real sites. Search products change, and a step that was right when I published can go stale. I can also be wrong about the method.
If you disagree with the approach, the facts, or the outcome, I want the detail. Tell me what is off, what you would do instead, and where you saw it. I use that to correct the post so the next reader is not stuck.
This is not a comment thread. Use Contact me so the note is tied to this post and I can reply.
