You added services in Google Business Profile (GBP), saved the list, and they still do not appear on Search or Maps. The editor shows them. The public listing does not.
That split is common. Google only shows services for certain categories, it auto-rejects custom names that break policy, and the public profile can lag behind what you just saved.
This post covers how to tell those failures apart, which edits actually get a service to display, and when the listing will never show a services section at all.
Services stay hidden when the primary category does not support the editor, when a custom name is rejected, or when you are looking at a stale public view. Confirm the category first, replace rejected custom items with Google's suggested services, and check the live profile rather than the editor. If the category cannot show services, no amount of rewriting will make the section appear.
Confirm the listing can show services at all
Not every business type gets a services section. Google's own help says the editor is available for certain categories, typically service businesses, and that the suggested list is tied to the category you picked.
Open the public listing on Search and on the Maps app. If there is no Services heading at all, the category is the first place to look, not the wording of each item.
Google's category guidance asks you to pick the most specific primary category that describes the core work. A vague or mismatched primary can hide the whole editor. Changing it can trigger another verification, so only switch it when the current category is plainly wrong.
Why a saved service still stays hidden
When the section exists but some items never appear, the cause is usually one of a few editor problems.
- A custom service name was auto-rejected because it included prices, a phone number, personal details, gibberish, or language that breaks policy.
- The item sits under a service category that does not match how Google groups that work, so it never attaches to a query.
- The public listing has not refreshed yet, so the editor is ahead of what Search and Maps still show.
- You added details, such as a description or price, but the name itself is empty, duplicate, or too close to an existing suggested service.
Google's services editor help is explicit that custom names which violate policy are rejected automatically. The editor can still look saved on your side while the public profile drops the item.
Fix rejected and missing items
Prefer Google's suggested services over custom ones wherever a close match exists. Suggested items are already mapped to how people search, and they are far less likely to disappear after you save.
Rewrite any custom name as a plain service, not a pitch. "Drain cleaning" survives. "Best drain cleaning in town, call now" does not. Keep prices and phone numbers out of the name and put them in the details fields if you need them.
Group related work under the matching service category inside the editor rather than stuffing everything under one heading. A plumbing profile that lists electrical work under the same group is harder for Google to surface on the right queries.
Check the live listing, not only the editor
After you save, search the business name and open the public profile. On Maps, look under Services. If an item is missing there, treat the public view as the source of truth.
Give a clean save a day or two before assuming it failed. Edits to services can take time to show, the same way other profile fields do. If a custom item is still gone after that, delete it and add the closest suggested service instead of resubmitting the same string.
What this will not fix
Services that do not show are not the same problem as a listing that ranks in the wrong city or a profile with citation errors. Those sit on the website and directory side, covered in fixing location pages that rank in the wrong city.
A services section also will not appear if the category cannot support it. In that case, stop editing custom names and get the primary category right first.
Getting services to display, and keeping the rest of the profile consistent, is part of local search and Google Business Profile work. For a review of what the public listing currently shows, start with Get Free Assessment.
If this post is wrong, outdated, or you would take a different path
I write from work I have done on real sites. Search products change, and a step that was right when I published can go stale. I can also be wrong about the method.
If you disagree with the approach, the facts, or the outcome, I want the detail. Tell me what is off, what you would do instead, and where you saw it. I use that to correct the post so the next reader is not stuck.
